The Champ Is Here

And he is ready to defend his title.

Current Australia one Brad Ludlow has been putting in the hours to get his #1 DiCandilo Steel City machine capable of winning this weekends Australian Late Model Nationals. And to add to the extra work load, he has been preparing a car for Kalgoorlie driver Rick Musarra to race this weekend as well.

“We are still campaigning the trusty car we used last year to win the national crown, so I’m going into the weekend with a package I know.” He said from his workshop on Thursday “But the competition is very strong. I reckon they would be at least 2-3% better than me at the moment as I haven’t done the laps, so it’s a matter of making sure we have the car to be around at the end. After seeing the Motorplex last night at practice it sure looks to be heading in the right direction to be a fast track on the weekend that’s for sure”.

Ludlow is the first to admit it hasn’t been an ideal lead in to a national crown as he has only raced at one event in the last month and a half, but is more than excited about this event. “Doug Drown, Jeep Van Wormer, Craig Vosbergen and Marc Giancola are going to be the ones to watch this weekend, but we will give ourselves every chance to be up there once again at the pointy end of the field. Its gonna be tough but we will turn up with what we know this car can do and hopefully we wont be caught out too much by the track. It’s all about getting some laps in and building up some confidence over the two nights.”

He is one of the first to admit that to see two Americans in the field is a dream come true, something many of the original starters in this division envisioned all those years ago. “It’s fantastic what both Warren and Craig have done to get these guys out to race here. Hopefully it will encourage more Americans to come out and contest events like this. I can’t wait to compete against these two and I’m sure it will help the division to grow and develop”.

All that aside it’s the win he wants, but there will be a further twenty eight drivers who will want the same result. This is shaping up to be one of the all time great sedan shows seen at the Perth Motorplex, and every single racer will be giving their all to try and win this one, just take a look at the quality of field already listed to compete this weekend.

Naturally there are some favorites like Drown, Van Wormer, Blake, Ludlow and the Vosbergen, but on their night all you need is for someone like Halliday, Cardy Grimson, Oldfield, Disney the senior brigade in Big Bad Bert Vosbergen or Ben Ludlow (just to name a few) who if everything goes right on the night could be a force to consider.

This is the strongest filed of contenders seen in a Late Model meeting ever in Australia, and if I was asked to pick a winner, I’d just shake my head, smile and say that it’s too tough to call - how about the guy who crosses the line first!
