HOLMES WINS WA AMCA ACTION ROUND 5
Current WA State Champion Michael Holmes showed the field a clean pair of heals with an all the way win at Esperance on Saturday 29th December. The event is a triple crown not only being a full WA points round but also round 2 of the “Country Tri Series” and the local clubs “South East Open Championship”. 9 Perth based AMCA’s made the 750 kilometre trek to the south east coastal town along with 3 Kalgoorlie cars plus 3 Esperance locals making 15 nominations all up.
After qualifying outside pole in the WA1 “Redline” Holmes beat the local Esperance club champion Carl Melder (#18 Redline) to the first corner and was never challenged for the rest of the 20 lap final. Jac Dolmans Jnr (#7 Cardy) – winner of the first four rounds made an impressive charge from position 8 up to second place but despite having several opportunities at restarts couldn’t match the pace of Holmes. When the chequered dropped it was Holmes from Dolmans 5 car lengths back then Melder a further 5 car lengths behind that. Rounding out the top five where Lionel Kirkby & Trevor Bosveld.
The heat racing was very entertaining with all 15 nominations thrown in together on the tight 400m race way. This lead to some very impressive 3 wide racing on the immaculately prepared track but left several cars looking a little worse for wear.
Heat one saw some spirited racing between front runners Eddie Boeg (#78 Redline), rookie Jason Bond (#99 Barstead) and Holmes out of position 7. Holmes inherited the lead when Boeg spun on his own accord only to retire several laps latter with a faulty fuel pump. This left Rookie Jason Bond to record his maiden AMCA victory followed home by Melder & Kalgoorlie’s Lionel Kirkby (# 58 Ludlow).
Heat 2 was the pick of the racing all night with Dolmans & Holmes entertaining the crowd racing the high lines for the entire race. After Dolmans finally wrestled the lead from Kirkby he had to retire with fuel system trouble. After Kirkby also pulled infield Holmes threw everything he had at Boeg actually gaining the lead at one stage then a yellow light interrupted and positions were put back to the lap before. In the end it was Boeg from Holmes by half a car followed home by Esperance’s Peter Walker (#13 Redline) for third.
Heat 3 was a sneak preview of things to come in the feature with Holmes wining easily from outside pole and Dolmans capturing second after storming through the pack. Third place went to Kirkby.
AMCA’s next race is a non points round at Kwinana on 25th January 2008. Mike Holmes, Jac Dolmans Jnr & Lionel Kirkby will be heading to Mildura on the Australia Day Long weekend to compete in the AMCA Australian title. The series then returns to Kwinana on 15th February for AMCA Action series round 6 AMCA Action Series points top 10 after 5 rounds
