Blake is King of the Ring

Sixteen beautifully presented Late Model Sedans thundered into Atwell Park Speedway in Albany Saturday night November 26, for the 4th annual King of the Ring event that doubled as Round 5 of the R2C Competition Filters Pro Dirt Series.

The Late Models turned on an action packed show, with high intensity, and extreme speeds on the new track surface. The new clay, combined with the extra banking, topped by the brute power generated by the V8 Late Models, had the crowd roaring for more.

Brad Blake won both his heats in a new car that was only pulled out of the container from the US three days prior to the event. Blake’s car may not have been the prettiest, but it sure was one of the fastest. Craig Vosbergen and Warren Oldfield also won a heat each.

Rookie drivers Koran Atkinson, Chris Biddle, and Nat Muir, all had great runs in their heats, placing in the top three.

The 6 lap A dash was the race of the season, with Vosbergen, Blake, Jamie Oldfield,  and Warren Oldfield, all running side by side, at top speed, with clean passing. Racing with experience, and skill, they clearly showed why they are the top four names currently in the R2C Competition Filters Pro Dirt Series pointscore.

The final race of the night kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. The racing action started from the moment the green flag dropped and the drivers put the pedal to the metal. Unfortunately two separate racing incidents on the first lap of the race caused major panel damage to some cars, including Craig Vosbergen’s #8, meaning he was unable to resume the race after qualifying on pole position.

After two complete restarts the race got underway, and ran the full 30 laps without a stoppage, with the race leaders weaving their way in and out of lapped traffic to make it a lap scorer’s worst nightmare.

Once the black and white flag dropped, and the dust settled, a very happy Brad Blake proudly took the winner’s cheque and his place on top of the podium, glad to claim his first win this season.
Second went to Warren Oldfield, who led the first half of the race until Blake slipped by. Jamie Oldfield placed third, charging through the field after being sent to the rear following one of the restarts on the first lap.

The hard charger award went to Simon McNab, who crossed the line 4th for his best finish this season after starting out of 15th position.

Round 6 of the R2C Competition Filters Pro Dirt Series will see the Late Models return to the Perth Motorplex on December 10.
