Black Night Blasts Back This Saturday. Former Late Model Racing Australia National Champion Ryan Halliday returns to competition this Saturday night at the Perth Motorplex when those rumbling Dirt Late Models make their presence felt in a fitting tribute to one of Australia’s greatest speedway racers, Michael Figliomeni. Halliday, known as the ‘Black Night’ to speedway fans in Western Australia, has had to bypass the two opening meetings this summer, the opening round of the Champion Canopies Pro Dirt Late Model Series at Kalgoorlie, plus the opening show at ‘The Plex”. “We had to miss the opening meetings due to a planned family holiday that we booked a long time ago.” Halliday mentioned yesterday. “We thought that there wouldn’t be any shows this early in the year when we made the bookings. But it was great to get up to Malaysia for the Moto GP, and then on to Singapore for a week. Dad wanted to fly back early for the opening meeting in Perth but that got shot down in flames” he laughed. Needless to say Halliday should be fairly relaxed come the weekend, but would have preferred to get some practice laps in last Wednesday, only for rain to intervene. “We tried some new Integra shock absorbers last year that we had a few problems with, but during the off season we spent some time on the shock Dyno and we think we are now headed in the right direction with the rates we need to run on our #99 GT Radials GRT Cadillac.” But you can be assured of one thing; he won’t have it easy this weekend for the running of the Magic Man 34 Late Model races. The likes of Warren Oldfield (DVF Plumbing & Gas #15…….), the father and son DiCandilo Steel team of Ben (#2 …..) & Brad Ludlow (AUS1…..), The ‘O Show’ Brad Blake (Blake Auto Centre #0…), newcomer Jason Moyle in his Mortgage Force #6…., plus the ever present Worldwide Construction Machinery Team Vosbergen cars of Craig and ‘Big Bad Bert’ will give the returning Halliday plenty to think about on the track at Kwinana. There are eighteen nominations for this weeks round at Kwinana Beach, and you can expect all of the LMRA drivers to give it their best come Saturday, in what will be a fitting tribute to one of speedways best, the Magic Man, Mike Figliomeni, who as people may not know also competed in Dirt Late Models during their early years.
